The Green Pond Baptist Church has a rich heritage dating back over 75 years. The church was founded on August 8th, 1948 under the leadership of Reverend Hugh Nicholson. The first building was erected at the corner of County Road 12 and Eastern Valley Road (where the Korner Store stands). In the late 1960’s Pastor Alton Doriety felt the Lord directing the church to build a new sanctuary. The church moved to its present location, and the new building was dedicated on December 28, 1969. That original structure has had two additions since that time. The first addition was completed in 1978 and the other (began in 1979) was completed in 1986. In 2003, the Green Pond Baptist Church started collecting funds to build a new multi-purpose building. Phase One of the building began with the building being erected in September 2012. Phase Two was started in August 2013. In January 2015, we dedicated the entry way, annex hall, and the two bathrooms of our new Fellowship Center and began work on Phase 3. We will continue that work as the Lord provides funds.
The church was organized as a Southern Baptist church, but left the convention in the 1970’s and has remained an Independent Baptist church since that time. There are no doctrinal differences in Independent and Southern Baptist churches, as every Baptist church is autonomous (free to govern itself according to the Scriptures). The major difference between the two types of churches relates to finances.
Most Southern Baptist churches participate in a financial cooperative program. It is through that financial program that Southern Baptist churches support missions and the majority of their charity / outreach work. Independent Baptist churches meet and select their own missionaries and outreaches. This gives Independent Baptists a personal link to the people and ministries that do the work of the church locally and abroad. Green Pond Baptist Church supports over 30 missionary families each month, and current letters from missionaries can be read on the computer monitor located in the main vestibule of the church.
In February 1986, Pastor Carl D. Hall accepted the pastorate of the Green Pond Baptist Church. Married to the former Kathy Denise Sherrill since 1975, they have six children and many grandchildren. Pastor Hall is a graduate of Tennessee Temple University and has been in the ministry since he was 18 years old. Pastor Hall believes in old fashioned, straight shooting, easy-to-understand preaching. Throughout their years together, Kathy has served with her husband as secretary, ladies’ ministries director, and pianist (just to name a few areas of service for her). In recent years she has returned to her own studies in the fields of counseling and emergency medical training. The Hall’s goals are to be able to minister to the whole man.
The Green Pond Baptist Church is an old fashioned, family oriented church. We believe and preach the Bible, sing the old hymns and celebrate major milestones in the lives of our families. If you have questions about our church, or how we operate, feel free to call the staff for an appointment. We will be glad to discuss our vision for the Lord with you.
